Is it difficult to change the spark plugs in a V6 2000 Exporer?

What else should I do to complete a tune-up?Is it difficult to change the spark plugs in a V6 2000 Exporer?hey rodney!. i changed some plugs in my neighbors explorer not too long ago, she has a vehicle like yours. the drivers side isnt too bad, the passengers side can be a bear, but there not impossible to change. to do a complete tune-up, you need to do the followings. new plugs and wires, oil and filter change in the engine and maybe the tranny, pcv valve, clean out the throttle body(just get some throttle body cleaner for that and a white rag)new cap and rotor, air and gas filter, check all hoses, including vacuum hoses,on that gas filter, you probably need a special tool for that, because its got that qiick connect ends on the gas filter.i cant think about anything else, but that should keep you busy for a while. good luck with your tune-up.Is it difficult to change the spark plugs in a V6 2000 Exporer?not as bad as the v8. a third elbow helps.ha ha . just extensions and a wobble socket and lots of patience. Is it difficult to change the spark plugs in a V6 2000 Exporer?Techinician might help...Is it difficult to change the spark plugs in a V6 2000 Exporer?one more time...plugs are not a tune up,,, the car is 7 yrs old..look in your qwners manual..or better get shop manual..15 little dollars,,,if you r gona work on your own car its a must...now the rants over...at least put new wires on it/air filter..../clean or replace egr....Is it difficult to change the spark plugs in a V6 2000 Exporer? The spark plugs on the drivers side were not to bad. THE passenger's side is another story. I had to take the inner fender well out to get to the very back ones. After that much work I did replace the plug wires at the same time Good Luck

If your car is in good shape you can have the same plugs. Check them annually to keep them from sticking. If your engine is damaged and burns oil, that will affect the spark plug life. You shouldn't have problems like that in a '96.

How do I change the spark plugs on my 1999 Mercury Tracer?

No, I don't know the details about the engine. (It's an LS, the car, if that helps or matters.) Yes, I could take it to a mechanic if I had to, but I work weird hours and hardly ever have time available for that, and besides, I'd really just like to learn to do it myself.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. How do I change the spark plugs on my 1999 Mercury Tracer?Without knowing the specifics of the vehicle, and becaus eno-one else has tried to help you yet, I'll do my best. I assume this is the first time you'll be doing this job.

Pop-off the spark plug wires, one at a time. These are the (black probably) thick cables that seem to spider accross the motor. Under each one is a spark plug. If I remember the tracer corrdectly, it has a 4 cylinder front wheel drive motor, so the plug (and wires) will lead either to the verfy center of your valve cover, in a horizontal line, or just above your exhaust manifold.

Now, like I said, do one at a time so that you don't mix up wires. Pop off the far left cable (grab the end 'boot' and pull. Now, using a spark plug socket (it will be designated on the side as such, having a protective and 'sticky' piece of rubber in it) put the socket onto the spark plug. SLOWLY 9as to not break the ceramic plug) apply force counter clock-wise until the plug come loose (this may require quite some force). Now, 'gap' your new spark plug (call your local autoparts store if you need help). To install, use a piece of rubber hose and stick the end of the plug (the screw on metal and ceramic part) into the hose. Screw in the plug using the hose, so that there won't be anough pressure to strip the threads on the head incase you do it wrong. After you're sure it's in straight, use the socket and install it securely. To install, you the same size socket, only without the rubber piece in it (other wise the socket may become stuck to the plug). Tighten it snugly, very tight without stripping the threads. After this is done, 'pop' the plug wire back on, and move on to the next. 10 minuts later, you have brand new plugs, meaning more power and better fuel economy.

Don't get psyched out, this is an incredibly easy procedure, and with these instrustion you can now do it on nearly every vehicle produces since the '60s

How do I change the spark plugs in my gas engine 4cl 2001 jetta?

I am ready and willing to do it myself and would love some advice. Thanks :-)How do I change the spark plugs in my gas engine 4cl 2001 jetta?Tools you'll need: ratchet, spark plug socket, and an extension. You can buy these from your local car parts store, Sears, Home Depot, Lowes, or a hardware store. I recommend that you go to Sears and get yourself a small toolkit. Talk to the folks there and tell them what you want and how much you're willing to spend. They'll match your needs and budget to their selection and get you set up.

Remove the plug wire from the spark plug and then remove the spark plug. Do each cylinder ONE AT A TIME so you don't get confused as to which wire goes where. Sometimes spark plug wires are numbered as to which cylinder they go to, but DO NOT trust those numbers. Somebody could have changed the wires or used a wire numbered %26quot;3%26quot; on number four cylinder.

Before installing the new plug, make sure the air gap between the electrodes is correct. You can obtain the correct gap from your car's repair manual. Your local library has manuals for virtually every car made. You may not, and probably won't, be able to take the book out of the library, but they will make a photocopy of the appropriate pages for you.

While you're under the hood check your air filter. Is it clean or do you need to replace it? You can tell by holding the filter between your eyes and a light source. If you can't see light through it, it's time to replace it.

Check your oil, too. Is it time to change it? If it is, come back here and I'll tell you how to do that, too. It's easy.

Good luck and have some good, messy fun!How do I change the spark plugs in my gas engine 4cl 2001 jetta?not to detract from what you say..l think its great to get ''under the bonnet'' assuming its the same as a petrol car its easy.....each plug has a lead...its important to replace the correct lead to the plug it came from...so

    1 buy your plugs

2 make sure you have a plug spanner

3 remove the first lead, with a firm but not a tearing pull...spray it inside with wd 40

4 using the plug spanner locate it over the plug(have a practice on one of the new ones to see how it locates)rap a cloth round your hand in case the spanner slips a plug spanner btw has a t handle and the business end has a snug fitting hexagonal domed spanner some have a rubber insert and it has a universal joint between the two...sounds technical but its easy really as it allows the spanner to bend to most angles..well you will see its easy

5 use a bit of brute force and ignorance anti clockwise keep the cloth round you hand

keep turning anti clockwise to loosen if its a bit tight a light tap with a hammer will assist...to loosen

6 turn turn turn and remove the old plug

7 carefully clean around the plug hole with white spirit...if you want you could put in a teaspoon of redex in the hole now its not essential but is an extra bit of maintenance..the engine will smoke a bit at start up..but its the cr-- out of your engine burning away and is quite normal but a bit alarming at first.

8 grab a new plug....and with you fingers only carefully locate the thread into the hole..take care and be willing to try 2/3times but ensure the thread is turning in smoothly into the hole...if its not remove an try again...

9 use the plug spanner to tighten down the plug to medium tightness firm but not ott

10 clip back on the lead it will 'snap' on

    11 start her up

blow the smoke out(if you used redex)

12 if all ok repeat the process for the other plugs one at a time...

now this is for a petrol engine....l am assuming gas is the same.....but check first...the rac or aa will advise. and take care a gas leak is classed as a major incident....and l would hate you to arrive in orbit unannounced

The water pump are usually swapped out when timing belts are done. If you have your timing belt done, then you probably had the water pump done. Don't do the water pump job by itself. You might as well do the timing belt together (or just wait till timing belt swap - if that is in your near future).

Good LuckWhen should I change spark plugs and wires on an echo? Also water pump.?It's overdue for wires and plugs, usually done at 100K. As for the water pump, manufacturer recommends 100K, but if you're due for a drain and change of fluid, which should be done every two years, no matter what they recommend, check the color of the old fluid. If it's the slightest bit rusty, then the pump should be changed. If it's still (usually) green, then don't worry. But you could see if the water hoses are getting soft and if they are, change them, top and bottom to radiator, and maybe to the heater.

  • How do I change spark plugs on a 94 j30?

It's a simple job. Just make sure you get the original NGK plugs. All you have to do is remove the two bolts holding down each coil and then pull the coil ...How do I change spark plugs on a 94 j30?You are going the need a spark plug socket(buy at most hardware/auto parts stores, different sizes so ask an employee or see if theres a book), a ratchet, and probably an extender. Wait for the engine to cool down. Once ready take out the wires from the holes. They're gunna need a good tug so don't wuss out. make sure you remember what wire goes to which hole, this is important. Usually the wire will have a number on the top of it to go to the corresponding cylinder. Now get the ratchet and spark plug socket, if you need an extender use that too. Plug the socket over the plug and unscrew it (lefty loosy, righty tighty). Repeat with all the other plugs. Now with all the plugs out, you can start putting the new ones in. Set the plugs in the socket and then into the hole. Make sure ur screwing it in straight. try to make it pretty tight. If your socket gets stuck in the hole when you pull the ratchet off, you can use a set of pliers to pull it out. Now with all the new plugs in, you can put back the wires in their corresponding spots. This again is going to require you to push hard to make sure the rubber part is in all the way. Once you get all those try to start the car. If your engine wobbles a lot or doesn't even start you did something wrong(i would assume you could have guessed that though). If ur engine shakes and rattles that usually means one of the cylinders isnt firing. Most of the time its because the wire isn't in all the way. If that dosnt help check all the plugs. If you still have problems consult a professional.

    Hope i helped

Good Luck once you're up and runningI purchased a 1983 cadillac fleetwood that's been sitting up for a year. change spark plugs and wires?Your problem is most likely the gas left in the vehicle for that amount of time. Even on my motorcycle and lawn mowers I drain the tanks and carburetors every spring before starting them. Take the cover off of the air cleaner and gas it a couple of times, if it smells like kerosene or fuel oil it's bad. That should also tell you if you actually have gas in the carb. and the needle valve isn't stuck. If it is stuck and the carb. is empty, take the fuel line off the carb. and spray carburetor cleaner through the inlet. As long as you have spark and fuel it should fire up.

You're spot on the money there. Its the direct coil pack you're referring to. There should be 2 or 3 bolts holding the coil pack ontop of the plugs, one at either end and maybe one in the middle, and there may be a little black single wired suppressor secured to one of the end bolts.

Undo them, lift the coil pack off the the plugs (it may put up a fight because its pushed onto the plugs), and then you have access to the plugs.

New plugs maintain peak engine performance and efficiency. Every engine will misfire occasionally. But as the number of misfires per mile goes up over time, it increases exhaust emissions, wastes gas and reduces power. In the past, most motorist would not notice the gradual decline in ignition performance until it reached a point where it created a steady miss, caused the engine to run rough, buck or stall, or made it hard to start. Not so today. All 1996 and newer vehicles have an OBD II onboard diagnostic system that tracks ignition misfires. When the rate of misfires exceeds a certain limit and causes emissions to increase 50% over baseline levels, it illuminates a warning light. Too bad older vehicle do not have this watchdog system. So on older vehicles, replacing the spark plugs at the recommended service intervals for preventive maintenance will reduce the risk of misfires and maintain peak engine performance. For standard spark plugs, the service interval is typically every 45,000 miles. Car starts fine with them. Now without checking them which I will do anyway......AS A GENERAL RULE OF THUMB HOW OFTEN DO COPPER SPARK PLUGS NEED TO BE CHANGED?

i have ac/delco plugs.I have Copper Spark Plugs how often should you change them? Mine r 7 years old w/ 13,000miles/20,000km on them?Your Source #1 is the Owner's Manual - if you have one. If not, check the make and type. Visit the manufacturer's web site and find out.

The mile interval is usually around 16,000 (or 25,000 km), but in your case the type of use would require a time-based replacement - my idea is around 5 years, not more, they don't cost a fortune.

Some new types of plugs last (and cost) much more, around 37,000 mi/60,000 km or even more, but yours are the traditional ones (Cu electrodes have been around for decades now).I have Copper Spark Plugs how often should you change them? I would change those roughly every 15,000 miles. If you notice a miss before then, then change erlier. Also change rotor and plug wires on a see-fit basis.

I do a oil change, I buy 2 filters. spark plugs, I also replace the pickup coil for the hell of it. very cheap to replace.

This is based on older GM vehivle, 370,000 miles. Runs as smooth as the day I bought it.

II have Copper Spark Plugs how often should you change them? Mine r 7 years old w/ 13,000miles/20,000km on them?I've gone about 30,000 miles and about to change them out. I believe the 30,000 mile mark is the recommended average life span of the copper plug.

The gas mileage is just as good from when I installed the new spark plugs.

My 10 year old (145,000 miles) car still runs fine.I have Copper Spark Plugs how often should you change them? Mine r 7 years old w/ 13,000miles/20,000km on them? The copper plugs should be replace every 30,000 miles as preventive maintenance, but them can last longer if no running problems. Or sooner if start to misfire. Time period makes no difference. They don't go bad like oil.

I am not familiar with newer engines let alone this is my first dodge. How do you change spark plugs on 2004 dakota 3.7?First off, the plugs are good for 100,000 miles so unless you have been driving cross country for the last two years, you probably don't need to change them. But they are right above the fuel rail in each side. They don't have traditional spark plug wires on them anymore. They have two thin wires that go into a unit that is bolted down to the top of the plug.

It took me a bit to find them too. I have the 2002 Dakota.

Ford Focus (1999) - Spark plugs - how easy to change?

    Your Question

    Focus:Spark plugs - I'm a beginner - how easy to change?

I heard I should get Platinum but heard the clearance and cross threading can be an issue. Should I leave it for the mechanics? I heard if I tightened them in by more than 1/16th on a turn (in the Haynes manual) and I don't use a torque wrench or set the clearance incorrectly then they become very inefficient. Is there a feeler gauge on my 1999 Ford Focus? How likely am I to make a mistake? Where is the cheapest place to by the platinum plugs from? I heard these days they come with some sort of clearance built into them?

Any links would be handy cheers. Are spark plugs generic to vehicles?Ford Focus (1999) - Spark plugs - how easy to change?they are not that hard to change. just make sure you don,t break them off in the head. you don,t need those high price plugs, just go with what it calls for. i,am not trying to run you down but if your not sure what to do then maybe you should let someone else change them.Ford Focus (1999) - Spark plugs - how easy to change? You need a mechanic to do it, doesn't sound like you have much mechanical knowledge about autos. • 2004 Frontier Supercharged, How do I change the spark plugs?

Do I have to take off the supercharger in order to get to the right side plugs? Its a really tight spot, If not is there any trick to getting them out?2004 Frontier Supercharged, How do I change the spark plugs? No. You should be fine getting them changed without doing that. There are all in really tight spots, except for large trucks and older cars. However, you must have something to help you up and down on, have plenty of light and all your tools needed at hand, and comfort yourself on a sitting spot which will not do damage to you nor your vehicle. You should be just fine. Be sure to gap them as they are specified to be. Hope this has helped you. Good luck and God bless. Alias.

Do spark plug wires really need to be replaced every time I change the spark plugs?

Do spark plug wires actually break-down with use?

Do they need to be replaced because of the possibility of damage upon removal?

You don't have to routinely replace any other wiring on a car/truck, what makes spark plug wires any different besides the high voltage (30kV).Do spark plug wires really need to be replaced every time I change the spark plugs?No...but they DO wear out over time. Many times they're damaged by tugging on them...I've busted quite a few this way when they're hard to reach. It's easy to pull the carbon filament (%26quot;the wire%26quot;) off the metal terminal (the part that snaps onto the plug.) The heat and leaking oil can wear them out as well.

I own a bunch of older cars and replace them only if I bust them or if they get to be about 100,000 miles on them. I recently bought a 1993 Buick with 190,000 miles on it. It ran a little rough (no surprise) and when I went to change the plugs, I found that one of the plug wires was completely worn through...and that the wires were the original ones installed when the car was built.

A set of plug wires for most domestic cars costs only about $20-30.00...so it's not big deal replacing them. (I have a neighbor though, who spent over $200.00 on plug wires for his Benz! That's more than I paid for most of my cars!)Do spark plug wires really need to be replaced every time I change the spark plugs? No they dont need to be changed everytime you change the spark plugs. I change mine every 50K miles..... Most wires will last the lifetime of your car. I had a burnt one so I changed the whole set.Do spark plug wires really need to be replaced every time I change the spark plugs? As long as the Ht leads are in good condition then they dont need to be replaced. only replace them if they are falling apart or are melted :)Do spark plug wires really need to be replaced every time I change the spark plugs?it depends on how many miles are on wires i like to replace mine about 50,000 miles because they go through drying out because of the heat through the wires and engine heat and when you replace them put a little grease on the spark plug before you put the wire on this will help next time you change your plugsDo spark plug wires really need to be replaced every time I change the spark plugs? No not everytime, However, if you are doing it yourself, might as well change them out every other set of plugs at 40,000 mile intervals or as needed.

Alot of repair shops will tell you to change them, and they will charge you another hour's labor to do it. Instead of the 20 bucks for wires, it will normally cost you 30 bucks for wires and 50 for labor.

So best thing is learn to change them yourself and save some money.Do spark plug wires really need to be replaced every time I change the spark plugs?no not every time about once every two years or soDo spark plug wires really need to be replaced every time I change the spark plugs? They do break down over time, but as a general rule, they normally need replacing around every 60k miles depending on the particular car. Look at your cars service handbook and it'll say when you should be doing it.Do spark plug wires really need to be replaced every time I change the spark plugs?I think yes or you are just throwing your $ away on plugs. They %26quot;burn up %26quot; on the inside. I just went thru all this with my car. IT's worth it to change them...and cheap.Do spark plug wires really need to be replaced every time I change the spark plugs? So long as they don't show any damage the answer is no!!

Due to heat, electricity, moisture and sometimes oil in the engine bay the plug wires do breakdown over time. They will normally last atleast 60000-80000 miles.

To remove the boot from the sparkplug, grip the boot and twist it back and forth on the sparkplug to loosen it first.

Always pull the boot, never the wire when removing it from the sparkplug.

I can say that this is a job that most anyone can do, but it takes some consideration and a little bit of time. 5.7L V-8 Spark Plug Removal

Eight of the 16 spark plugs are located under an ignition coil; the other 8 are not. If spark plug being removed is

under coil, coil must be removed to gain access to spark plug. Refer to Ignition Coil Removal/Installation and

    observe all CAUTIONS and WARNINGS.

Before removing or disconnecting any spark plug cables, note their original position. Remove cables one-at-a-time.

To prevent ignition crossfire, spark plug cables MUST be placed in cable tray (routing loom) into their original position.

Refer to Spark Plug Cable Removal for a graphic.

Before installing spark plug cables to either the spark plugs or coils, apply dielectric grease to inside of boots.

    1. Remove necessary air filter tubing at throttle body.

    2. Prior to removing ignition coil (if coil removal is necessary), spray compressed air around coil base at cylinder

    head cover.

    3. Prior to removing spark plug, spray compressed air into cylinder head opening. This will help prevent foreign

    material from entering combustion chamber.

    4. Remove spark plug from cylinder head using a quality socket with a rubber or foam insert.

    5. Inspect spark plug condition.

    5.7L V-8 Spark Plug Installation

    1. Special care should be taken when installing spark plugs into the cylinder head spark plug wells. Be sure the

plugs do not drop into the plug wells as electrodes can be damaged.

    2. Start the spark plug into cylinder head by hand to avoid cross threading aluminum threads. To aid in installation,

attach a piece of rubber hose, or an old spark plug boot to spark plug.

    3. The 5.7L V-8 is equipped with torque critical design spark plugs. Do not exceed 15 ft. lbs. torque. Tighten spark

    plugs. Refer to torque specifications.

    4. Before installing spark plug cables to either the spark plugs or coils, apply dielectric grease to inside of boots.

    5. To prevent ignition crossfire, spark plug cables MUST be placed in cable tray (routing loom) into their original

position. Refer to Spark Plug Cable Removal for a graphic.

    6. Install ignition coil(s) to necessary spark plugs. Refer to Ignition Coil Installation.

I do not recommend novice car owners and technicians with limited tools to attempt a tune up on such a car. Do I need any special tools to change my spark plugs?

I know you need a few basic tools, but I'm more concerned about the spacing. Can I just replace the spark plugs with out any special equipment, I've read in a few places that no spacing equipment is need because most cars are already pre set. My car is a 1989 Cadillac DevilleDo I need any special tools to change my spark plugs? You should always check the gap of a spark plug before you install it, even if it's %26quot;pre-set.%26quot; They aren't always pre-set to the right gap for your car, and they may have been dropped at some point. An inexpensive gap tool is less than $5.00

Do Not use platinum plugs! They foul out very quickly in older engines, and it's easy to remove the platinum on the electrodes by accident when you set the gap. Use regular AC Delco plugs.

The correct gap for your engine is .060%26quot; If you go with a narrower gap the heat of the spark will erode the electrodes and burn them to .060 anyway.Do I need any special tools to change my spark plugs?I think by spacing you mean the gap. The gap is the distance between the contacts at the end of the plug that goes into the engine. A spark plug gap tool is cheap. A fancy super megga gold pro one is only $20. Many stores have them for well under $5. They are usually a round disc with either tabs or just a ridge. There will be markings that tell you which tab to use or how far to slide it on the ridge. Many plugs do come pre gaped but you always want to check them to make sure they are right for your engine and that they did not get bent in shipping.

Your cadillac has a 4.5 V8. You will want to have a good assortment of socket extensions and swivel joints especially for the back ones. Good thing is these had iron heads (which is odd since the block is aluminum) so stripping and sizing is usually not a problem. These also still had a distributor so a cap, rotor, and wires need to be up to date also. Leave yourself plenty of time there is not much extra space under that hood.Do I need any special tools to change my spark plugs? It would be easier to have a spark plug socket. Compare to a regular 3/4 or 5/8 deep socket, there's insulation in the sp socket help take out the sp. There's also hex to allow you to turn the socket with a wrench instead of a racket if the space is too tight for a racket.

For your car, the spark plug is most likely platinum and they are pre-gapped. There's a risk of damage to the platinum tip if you'll try to check the gap, so no need unless it has been dropped.Do I need any special tools to change my spark plugs? No special tools other than a feeler gauge to set the gap on your new plugs but that all depends on what kind you get some plugs are already pre gapped. Other than that you just need a spark plug wrench a ratchet a short extension and a universal joint and you should be good if your plugs need to be gapped the man at the parts store can tell you what the gap should be or you can look under your hood at the front and there is a label that will tell youDo I need any special tools to change my spark plugs? If you were smart enough to use ONLY Mobil One in this engine, you may be smart enough to remove your own plugs. Forget about wires, they should last the lifetime of the car unless they got eaten by squirrels. Throw the GM plugs into the junk pile, where they belong, and buy either Denso Iridium or Bosch Fusion plugs. These require NO gapping, since they have 4 ground electrodes. You will get MORE power, lower emissions, and better MPG's with these. You won't believe the difference over the stock GM units. Even GM doesn't use them in their finer cars, anymore!! If you have NOT been using Mobil One in this car, start NOW. The oil pumps in these babies are like tinker toys and require the best oils made to prevent damage!! Believe me, I know!!Do I need any special tools to change my spark plugs?Bubba B probably has answered everything correctly, so I want to add my two cents worth. Never use one of those fancy high priced pre-gap spark plugs that claim 10 extra horsepower. A young fellow came in here with those installed and it caused the engine to idle rough. I put in what the factory recommended and smoothed out the idle. I always put in new wires when I install plugs because they are recommended. Also, I just looked in the GM manual and it's gap is .060.Do I need any special tools to change my spark plugs? You mean a plug gapping tool? Yes, you definently need one of those...get a round one not the wire type. Also some plugs boast being pre-gapped....no....that's a complete farce. Make sure that you check each new one before installing as their always, always out by a little bit %26quot;P. A 5/8%26quot; or 13/16%26quot; plug socket is handy but you can use the regular one if you make sure you dont drop a plug (a 2%26quot; fall can be fatal for a spark plug). How to change spark plugs on a 2000 toyota Tacoma?

    v6,3.4 ltr.

start with a cold engine.remove air tube between air box and throttle body.unplug and unbolt the coil packs.pull them directly up.a little twist back and forth may be needed.do not twist to hard.an extention 6-11'' will be needed.remove plugs.

on driver side, remove the wires,a twist may be neccasary.using an exteniton remove plugs.5/8 sparkplug socket needed.they or at least one ,back,is harder to get to but possible.dont pull on the wire itself.use some anti-sieze on the threads going back together.two different metals causes electrolosis.or simply it will sieze the plug in place.do not over tighten the plugs.

    4 cyl.2.4/2.7

remove wires.you will have to finagle the wires around but you do not have to remove breather hose.just be carefull do not pull on wires or you will be buying a new set.extention,socket,anti-sieze.needed.

timing is computer controlled,no since checking or trying to reset it.if there is a prob with timing it is in the chain or timing belt,v6.

How do you know when its time to change your spark plugs or alternator?

on a 2004 grand am i haven't change them ever since i pruchase the car in 2005.How do you know when its time to change your spark plugs or alternator? With spark plugs, normally your gas mileage starts to decline and when taking off, it is getting sluggish. Or you can always check them, if the gap is big and they are black and corroded. Normally change them every 15,000 miles, but check them first. Your alternator, well since it keeps your battery powered (generator), all the things that are run by your battery (lights, radio, other electrical devices). Lights seem dim or your car will hard to crank over other things such as that. How do you know when its time to change your spark plugs or alternator? When the alternator is about to go out, your AC, radio, gears with go on and off, car will go in and out of gear like it's dying then coming back to life.

Spark plugs? It's hard to say. But they're cheap to replace and improve MPG, so do it every few years.

How do you know when its time to change your spark plugs or alternator?

on a 2004 grand am i haven't change them ever since i pruchase the car in 2005.How do you know when its time to change your spark plugs or alternator? Now would be a good time to change out your spark plugs. Every 3 years is rather standard.

Alternator on the other hand, That is one of those things you don't replace it unless its broken! So long as your battery is still charging its still working fine. Your alternator should last at least 10 more years.

  • I need to change my spark plugs can you tell me where they are and how to get to them?

I cant find the back 4 spark plugs and i cant seem to get to the front 4 what and where can i find them or a map of the engine i have a 1992 cadillac De Ville v 8(i think)I think it a 4.9 or something like thatI need to change my spark plugs can you tell me where they are and how to get to them?If you don't know this, you are unfit to be doing it. Things like using the wrong torque, mixing up the leads, using the wrong plug, dropping something into the cylinder while a plug is out, etc will cause you grief. Fixing the resulting problems will cost more than you will save.

Ask a friend. This is a basic bit of car maintenance and many people can do it without a detailed manual. Your spark plug supplier (auto shop) will tell them the torque to use. But honestly, don't go there.I need to change my spark plugs can you tell me where they are and how to get to them?Brett2010 was a total ***, i'm sure if it were a guy asking that question he wouldn't even have said something like that- not knowing where your spark plugs are is a completely normal thing!! especially if you haven't changed them before!! good luck, i hope you got them changed

Will going from a b9es to a b8es in spark plugs for a banshee change anything? will it make it run any better?

i know its just a hotter plug, will it burn all of the fuel better? i just run premo from the pump, with mobil 1 sythetic oil at 50:1, will i notice a dif going to hotter plug? Will going from a b9es to a b8es in spark plugs for a banshee change anything? will it make it run any better?Jap Plugs(NGK,DENSO)= Higher Number%26gt;Colder.

The Numbers go OPPOSITE a Thermometer.

    US/Euro Plugs= Higher #%26gt;Hotter,

The Heat Numbers Follow a Thermometer

    ......................................?br>

Spark Plugs either ignite the fuel mixture,,,or they dont.

If one plug Lights the charge,,,no other plug is gonna Add any extra benefit to that Specific Function.

    It's as simple as that.

Yet,,,there's a BUNCH of technical characteristics spark plugs have which ARE Important to an engine's operation.

HEAT RANGE,,,,and %26quot;Hotter/Colder%26quot; is very widely misunderstood.

The Plug does NOT make Heat,,,

and Heat Number does NOT refer to anything the PLUG produces.

A B4 or B5(extremely Hot) fire exactly the same as B10 or B11 (Extremely Cold).

What it Refers to is the Plug's Function as a RADIATOR.

It's a comparative Ranking of the Plugs ability to REMOVE Heat away from it's TIP,,,and into the engine%26gt;then out into the air.

A Plug's Tip has an Optimum TEMP range to function properly.

If the TIP is Too Cold,,,it will foul with caked -on deposits.

It can also extend warm-up cycle time.

Example:Start an engine on a very Cold Plug,,,then Rev It,,,it will be very easy to FOUL the plug.

Because the Cold plug takes a %26quot;long time%26quot; to reach the PLUG'S self-cleaning temp

They also are more Prone to Fouling when shutting the throttle after a full throttle burst.

The Plug's Temp drops rapidly,,,and it gets coated with deposits %26quot;instantly%26quot; from the Temp Differential in the Combustion chamber.

    .....................

Hot Plugs are SLOW to transfer their tip heat,,as well as Reaching Higher absolute temps

They reach optimum TIP temp quicker on cold start,,,and maintain that %26quot;self-cleaning temp%26quot; Longer during Decelleration.

If they are TOO Hot,,,and cool Too Slowly,,,,their Tip can reach an Auto-Ignition point.

Hot enough to ignite the fuel BEFORE actual Plug Firing occurs.

If the Tip becomes excessively Hot,,,that can create a different type of Fouling.

It can Glaze various chemicals in the oil/fuel into a NON-conductive %26quot;insulation%26quot; on the Plug Tip,,,

OR into a CONDUCTIVE coating on the Tip,,which shorts out the plug

    ................................

So when you are selecting Heat Range,,,

    all you are doing is %26quot;Tuning the Tip Temperature%26quot; of the PLUG in order to keep it within a range which;

    A) Hot enough to ensure self-cleaning

    B)Cold enough to avoid Auto-Ignition

    Nothing More,Nothing less.

Hi-Perf engines typically use comparatively Colder Plugs because the engines often produce Sharp,Sudden Spikes in Combustion Chamber Temps at their Power Peak.

%26quot;Racey Motors%26quot; run in the Wisest range of Chamber temps.

Cold Plugs are a Necessary Evil in order to accomodate the surge in Temps at the engine's power peak.

At Lower-Than PEAK POWER,,,the plugs are %26quot;too cold%26quot; and often prone to fouling rather easily..

    ..................................

Your Banshee is originally fitted with 8's anyway

If you're not having probs with Fouling or Plug Life,,,,You'll not see any benefits from a Heat Range change.

    ..................................

One exception of sorts is NGK's Iridium Plugs.

Their technology is such that under marginal ignition conditions,,,they can show an improvement.

They have a very wide heat range,,,making engine less sensitive to Ignition Demands under various operating conditions.

MOST engines Do Not fire 100% of the time,,,they DO skip a beat occasionally.

    It's only a handful per 1000 strokes.

The Iridiums can eliminate or minimize that occurence.

    Sometimes it's Noticeable,,,sometimes NOT.

It may be an improvement in,,

    -cold start

    -idle

    -low speed operation

    -throttle transition,,when accelerating

Who knows when/where???? Just No Tellin'.

But they are proven to reliably ignite more consistently, and under a wider range of conditions than standard plugs.

If your Banshee is running good,,,,

as far as ignition goes Not even a Flamethrower will make any worthwhile improvement.

**Symptoms of TOO HOT a Plug are an odd %26quot;poof%26quot; sound from the exhaust which becomes extreme as rpms increase.

Thats caused by IGNITION occurring Prematurely while Exhaust Port is still Open.

So it's Literally Combustion Occuring inside the Exhaust Pipe,,,rather than in the Combustion chamber.

You'll Know it immediately,,,it's NOT a subtle thing.

Engines which %26quot;get Damaged%26quot; from Too HOT a Plug are NOT being Damaged by the Plug's Heat Range.

    That's a MYTH %26amp; Misunderstanding.

If the Plug becomes TOO HOT,,,

I Gaurantee Ya it WILL Pre-Ignite Fuel before it melts aluminum.

Other Conditions are the Root Cause of the destruction,,,Poor 'ol Spark Plugs are just a Patsy which gets blamed for it.

An engine with a Too-Hot Plug can be triggered Very Quickly and Suddenly in Pre-Igntion.

But the Excess Temp Spike in the Combustion Temps is NOT the PLUG's Fault.

The Plug is simply overwhelmed by it,,,

making the PLUG the First Victim in the chain of Overheating events.

Spark Plugs are NOT Temp Sensor Safety Fuses.

Yet they DO act to give early warning of overheating.

If they FAIL at being used as a Safety Device,,,which they are Not designed or intended to do,,,

    It's silly to Blame the %26quot;Hot Plug%26quot;

    Good Luck,,hope that helps

.Will going from a b9es to a b8es in spark plugs for a banshee change anything? will it make it run any better?Actually brek69amx you are incorrect, about NGK's numbering system at least..

    http://www.ngksparkplugs.com/tech_support/spark_plugs/faqs/faqcode.asp?mode=nml

Will going from a b9es to a b8es in spark plugs for a banshee change anything? will it make it run any better?Actually ngk's numbering system is backwards so the b9es is the hotter plug of the 2. By going to a colder plug the engine %26quot;in theory%26quot; should run a little cooler but you may have issues fouling the plugs. Will going from a b9es to a b8es in spark plugs for a banshee change anything? will it make it run any better? The NGK B8ES is definitely a Hotter Plug than the B9ES. If you have a problem fouling the sparkplug, then you could go one range hotter and it may keep the plug from fouling. As far as running better, hard to say, it may run longer. Any vehicle that has a fouled plug is going to run better for a while, until it fouls again.

As far as a performance improvement, you will not see much other that the plug may not foul as fast.

If you look at the two plugs, you will see that the center electrode ceramic material inside the combustion chamber end is shorter on the colder sparkplug. One the hotter plug it is longer. The longer the length, the hotter the sparkplug. This is due to the heat dissipation of the center electrode. Heat has a further distance to travel from the center electrode tip and thus it stays hotter. By staying hotter it will burn off the oil or fuel from the tip and stay cleaner. If it gets too hot it will start glowing in the cylinder head and the mixture will detonate or explode too soon and will not give you a nice slow controlled burn or flame front.

How often am i supposed to change my spark plugs?

    i have a 1998 chevy camaro

i just changed the plugs and wires yesterday.

so how many miles do i have til i need to again?

thanks ;)How often am i supposed to change my spark plugs? It all depends upon the brand and type of spark plugs you just installed in your cylinder heads. Inexpensive non-platinum or iridium plugs last 25 - 30,000 miles. Platinum plugs are good for 50,000 miles while long lasting iridium plugs will go 75 - 100,000 miles.

A couple of small tips the next time you install spark plugs: Wipe a small amount of %26quot;Never Seize%26quot; compound on the threads of the plugs before installation. Wipe a liberal amount of Silicone ignition grease inside each spark plug boot before snapping them back on the plugs. This step seals out moisture and allows easy removal of the boots from the plugs anytime in the future. The Never Seize prevents plug and cylinder head thread damage during removal or installation. Any NAPA or Carquest store has both of these inexpensive products.

Please consider a fresh set of AC-Delco or MSD ignition wires every 50,000 miles. As spark plug wires age electrical OHMS of resistance goes up inside the core and electrical dielectric insulation on the outside of the wire goes down. Don't consider cheap box-store ignition wires. ACDelco distributors or any Chevrolet dealer has AC-Delco ignition wires. autopartswarehouse.com, partstrain.com and autopartsgiant.com. has MSD ignition wires.

In plain English it's more difficult for the electrical energy to pass through the wire as they age. The high voltage tends to leak through the outer insulation jacket as the wire gets older. High under-hood heat and vibration deteriorates ignition wires. How often am i supposed to change my spark plugs?I think for your car its every 100k mi. Don't quote me on that. For earlier models, I think like '95 and older its every 60k mi.

However, my personal opinion, as the odometer keeps going the gap on the spark plug is changing ever so slightly. You might want to check the gap every 10k. I used to own a '91 ford escort when I was going to college, I was tight on money and needed for my car to last. It was a POS but it worked. I would change my spark plugs every 10k mi. It was only like $10 - $15.

Country Boy, if you don't know what your talking about, stop. Electrical wires can last for years and years, just look at all the residential and commercial wiring. The current flow through the wires doesn't change over time. Heat, direct sunlight and vibration are what cause the insulation on the wires to deteriorate. However, this has no effect on the current flow just the ability to insulate the wire from arcing and protect it from the extreme heat. The only thing that damages the wires are the movement of the wires as you move them out of the way to work on the car. You can possibly break the wire or snap the connectors that are inside the boot and connect the wires to the spark plugs. There is no electricity that leaks out since the rubber is an insulator.

And the anti-seize gel does not protect the threads from damage against the spark plug or however you put it. Yes its good to put it on but to prevent water from going into the threads and the extreme heat vaporizing it causing rust to form between the spark plug and the cylinder head. If the spark plug does seize and you don't know what you're doing then you could damage the threads on the cylinder head manifold, but that could be repaired as well. How often am i supposed to change my spark plugs?factory recommends a length of time and mileage. a gm or chevy dealer can help you.

    http://www.autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker

There are lots of manufacturers that make spark plugs for the T-Bird. Here are a few (the car came with single platinums from the factory so at least get these):

    Regular:

    Champion - 407

    Autolite - 2545

    ACDelco - R44NTSE

    Bosch - 7590

    Single Platinum:

    Champion - 3407

    Autolite - AP2545

    ACDelco - 41811

    Bosch - 4212

    Double Platinum:

    Champion - 7407

    Autolite - APP2545

    Bosch - 4309

    Others:

    Bosch +4 Platinum - 4469

    Champion Iridium - 9402

    Autolite Xtreme Performance - XP5145

There are lot's of choices to make. I have a 1996 T-Bird and I use Autolite Double Platinums and they work beautifully. The gap specification is 0.054 inches. Some plugs will come pre-gapped, others won't. A gap gauge is only $1 so you should check it to be sure. Good luck!

Do I need to change my spark plugs..?

I have a 92 Honda del sol and it has trouble starting on the first go..i have had it for about 2 months so im not sure if the spark plugs need changing, but could that be the problem its not starting right away?Do I need to change my spark plugs..?Did you check with the previous owner and ask what kind of maintenance he has performed on it? If your car hasn't had a tune-up in around the past 80,000 miles or so, then it would definitely be time for new plugs, wires, and distributor cap (assuming your car uses a distributor, I'm not sure on that one).

If you are unable to abtain the previous maintenance info on the car, then you'll need to remove one of the spark plugs and check the tip. You could also take off your distributor cap and see if the spark terminals are badly worn (which will also give you a good indication about the condition of the spark plugs).

Hey %26quot;kevroybu%26quot;, there's no such thing as an automatic choke on any car built in 1992. Those relics only exist on carbureted engines, which became obsolete in the mid 1980's.Do I need to change my spark plugs..?could be lots of reasons for late starting, but a good complete tune up cannot hurt since you apparently do not know if it was previously done.Do I need to change my spark plugs..?yes that is a common problem with todays cars too the spark plugs dont last as long as they are built to as they did inthe past when they was made really good and if you change the spark plugs and cap if you have one and change the wires the car will start up better and faster too hope this helps,,,,Do I need to change my spark plugs..?nope. not spark plugs.i'll bet you any money the auto choke is gone. have this looked at before you waste time and money on anything else. a good service would'nt go amiss either

  • If I change out my spark plug wires do I have to put in new plugs?

Someone told me that if I change out my spark plug wires I would HAVE to put in new spark plugs too. Do I? Would it damage the old spark plugs themselves to have new wires??If I change out my spark plug wires do I have to put in new plugs?removing and replacing the wires is time consuming and if the wires have deteriorated the you will save time and money by doing both at the same time..it would not damage the old plugs but you might not notice much improvement in the way the engine runs with old plugs...It would be nice to know how many miles, months your old wire and plugs have been used.

Very recent model cars do not usually require replacement until about 100,000.... older cars with older style electrical need more frequent replacement. In older model cars plugs are usually good for about 15,000 miles or so and wires for 30,000 miles but a lot depends upon your driving and many other things...like correct grade of good gas and frequent oil changes if you car has a control module that could affect performance if it has a %26quot;breaker%26quot; ignition then that should be serviced when you replace the plugs. If I change out my spark plug wires do I have to put in new plugs? You don't have to change the spark plugs with the wires, but it makes more sense to swap them out together. New plugs and new wires will help your car run more efficiently.

But you don't have to change them at the same time.If I change out my spark plug wires do I have to put in new plugs?Hi, Actually if your plugs are good then you don't have to change them. If the wire is worn out the reason for the wire to be worn out could be your Spark plug (in some cases). so get your plugs checked and then change it accordingly. If I change out my spark plug wires do I have to put in new plugs?nothing of the kind. U can keep the old plugs in the car. Nothing damaging can happen. new plugs dont always be necessary. If I change out my spark plug wires do I have to put in new plugs? You don't have to but why wouldn't you?

How do I change the spark plugs on a 1994 Chevy Corsica?

The garage quoted me $300 to change them since the engine is mounted sideways. How do I change the spark plugs on a 1994 Chevy Corsica?I assume you have the 3.1 V-6 engine...

The rear are the hardest, yet I can change them all in about 15 minutes. Just remove the ignition coil brackets, lift the unit up and out of the way. Make sure you mark what wires go where I get the firing order.

Then reach back and pull the ignition wires off the spark plugs. Use an extension bar and spark plug socket to remove the spark plugs. One at a time....

Install in order and your done. Reinstall ignition coil and you just save around 280.00 :)How do I change the spark plugs on a 1994 Chevy Corsica? All you need to do is find your spark plug wires and follow them to the engine. Pop them off one at a time and use a deep well socket (probably 5/8) and a ratchet (you might also need an extention) to take the plugs out. You'll need to check your spark plug gap before putting the new ones in, you can get the little tool at the auto parts store (just ask), and they might even be able to tell you there what the gap needs to be. Be sure you put the new plug in (tighten until just snug, don't crank the crap out of it) and replace the wire (use a little dielectric grease inside where the wire fits over the plug) before moving onto the next or you may get them mixed up and your firing order will be screwed up, therefore your car won't run.How do I change the spark plugs on a 1994 Chevy Corsica?go get you a rachet socket set make sure that you get an extended bar so you can reach the spark plugs do it yourself it's not hard and you can borrow the tools and that way all you have in it is the cost of the plugs and a little bit of your time. How do I change the spark plugs on a 1994 Chevy Corsica?Yes I've heard it's called the three plug tune up, because you have to be a contortionist to change the rear plugs......it's done from under the car reaching up between the firewall...$300 is probably a good deal...........

How do you change spark plugs on a 1996 Toyota Tercel?

gently remove the spark plug wire/boot off the plug (they require a good tug to %26quot;pop%26quot; off) remember which one goes where, OR, change one plug at a time leaving the boots on the other 3 plugs

using a proper sized spark plug socket and ratchet (it has rubber inside to protect the porcelain on the spark plug) remove the old plugs

make sure the new plugs are the correct ones and have the proper gap by using a gaping tool (available at auto parts stores for under $5, I prefer the %26quot;disc%26quot; style ones over the wire style) The proper gap can be found in the owners manual and/or on a sticker under the hood

carefully install the new plugs while trying not to let anything touch or hit the electrode on the spark plug (effecting your gap) and tighten with the ratchet and socket, about 1/4 to 1/2 turn pass finger tight. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN

re-install the boots on the plugs in the same place they came off (this is important, the ran will not run properly if they go in the wrong spot)

YOUR DONE!How do you change spark plugs on a 1996 Toyota Tercel? You remove the wires from the top of the plugs then put your socket on it and have about 7 people spin the car around while you hold the ratchet still. ;)

  • We are trying to change the spark plugs and plug wires for a tune up in a 2003 Cavalier...where are they locat?

We are trying to change the spark plugs and plug wires in an 2003 Cavalier...where are they located...my husband travels long distances and we r trying to get the vehicle to stay in good shape..what else can we do it has 113,000miles?We are trying to change the spark plugs and plug wires for a tune up in a 2003 Cavalier...where are they locat?Hi

your motor is in there sideways... with the front of the motor pointing towards the passenger side. So Half the the plugs are along the fire wall (hard to get to). the Coil pack is along the front below the motor Per say... The wires go thou a metal/plastic sleeve from the coil pack to the plugs at the back (it can be opened up to replace them). Its a tedious job but do it right and get the new wires back in the loom so the don't get burned up by the exhaust manifolds.

OH be sure to do the wires one at a time so to not get them mixed up

    good luck

If it's a 6 cylinder, you may not have the tools to get 3 of them out as they will be too close to the firewall. We are trying to change the spark plugs and plug wires for a tune up in a 2003 Cavalier...where are they locat?Plugs are located next to the exhaust manifold. Take one out at a time, and replace the plug wire at the same time, routing it the same way you took the old one off. AND ONE AT A TIME. To keep from crossing, and putting the plug wire with the wrong plug. If it is a four cylinder engine, they will all be in front. If it is a V6, you'll have 3 in front, and 3 in the back, next to the fire wall.

Also change the Air filter, PVC valve, and fuel filter. And an oil change would be good to.We are trying to change the spark plugs and plug wires for a tune up in a 2003 Cavalier...where are they locat? If you want to change plugs or other maintenance get a Chilton's manual at your local parts store, the manual will tell you everything you need including the gap required for the plugs you are installing and also don't ever take out plugs on a hot engine and if possible coat the threads with a anti-sieze compound, this will help to remove the plugs in the future especially if you have an aluminum head on your car.Good luck.
